UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas turned back Technological Institute of the Philippines, 25-16, 25-19, 24-26, 25-14, on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals of the V-League Collegiate Conference at The Arena in San Juan.
EJ Laure had 18 points, skipper Pam Lastimosa added 14 and Chloe Cortez chipped in 10 for the Tigresses, who have won three straight after a loss to Ateneo in its opening match.
Mela Tunay was brought to the hospital with a bloody nose after colliding with Lastimosa in the third set, and UST coach Kungfu Reyes said he told the Tigresses to take the fourth set for their injured teammate.
“’Di naman kailangan may masaktan, kaya kailangan namin ibawi si Mela sa fourth set,” said Reyes.
Down by one, 23-24, the Tigresses saved set point, 24-24, but TIP reached second set point, 25-24, after Tunay and Lastimosa collided and a net touch by UST extended the match.
“Lack of communication lang sa third set, sino ba ang dapat kukuha ng bola, nag-doubt ka sa sarili mo bigla mong kinuha ’yung isa naman ’di nagsasalita kinuha rin kaya ayun," said Reyes.
Guest player Hezzymei Acuna scored 13 points for TIP, which dropped to a 1-3 win-loss card.
