AZUELA Cove, Davao City — Earol Belonguil won a close finish against Matthew Justine Hermosa in the Alaska Ironkids swim and run on Saturday at Azuela Cove, Davao City.
Cebu’s Belonguil finished the 400-meter swim and 3-kilometer run event in 15 minutes and 29 seconds, just a second ahead of Hermosa. Zedrick James Borja clocked 15:44 for third place in the 13-14 years old division.
“My training really paid off, months of vigorous training paid off,” said Earol Belonguil, who had to catch up in the run after falling behind Borja in the swim leg.
“Though on the swim I got left behind by Borja, CJ [Borja] so strong on the swim. But with my team mate Justin Hermosa, the second we raised each other’s morale to finish strong and to finish this race as quickly as possible,” he added.
In the girls 13-14 class, Marielle Estreaba clocked 17:20 to beat Jeana Canete, who finished in 17:24, and Arianna Lim, who crossed the finish line in 18.12.
Juan Suarez won the 11-12 boys’ division 300-m swim and 2-km run in 00:13:42, edging Matthew Cagape (00:13:48) and Chuck Amaparo (00:13:52).
In the girls’ 11-12 division, Franchesca Caballero won in 15:31 followed by Aira Danara in 16:06 and Raiannelle Bacus in 17:40.
