PRESIDENT Duterte lauded the country’s hosting of the Southeast Asian Games and the launching of the National Academy of Sports during his State of the Nation Address on Monday.
In a rare mention of sports in the SONA, Duterte credited the athletes and officials for the successful staging of the SEA Games.
The Philippines captured 149 gold medals in last year’s event to win the overall championship, with the Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) chaired by House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano being the lead agency in the hosting of the biennial multisports competition in different parts of Luzon.
The 2019 SEA Games featured the state-of-the-art New Clark City Sports Complex in Capas, Tarlac that hosted the athletics and aquatics competitions.
“With the commitment of key members of Congress, Executive department, Phisgoc, the Philippine Sports Commission, and the Philippine Olympic Committee, we were bound together with one mission, to host the 30th Southeast Asian Games,” Duterte said.
“Our athletes prevailed. More than that, we fostered pride, patriotism, genuine sportsmanship, and camaraderie with our Southeast Asian brothers and sisters. Indeed, we won as one,” Duterte said.
The Chief Executive mentioned Republic Act 11470 or the National Academy of Sports which will provide secondary education to potential athletes with the campus located at the New Clark City.
Sen. Bong Go was the author of the National Academy of Sports act which was signed into law on June 9.
In his previous SONA, Duterte indicated his support towards the passing of the act.
“I appreciate the law of establishing the National Academy of Sports. We can now give our deserving student athletes the training and support they need to excel in their chosen field of endeavor,” said Duterte.
