SPORTS was finally mentioned at the State of the National Address (SONA) by the President on Monday.
President Duterte on Monday said he is supporting the creation of a national sports academy that will be catered to high school students.
“I support the proposed measure to create the national academy for sports for high school students,” said Duterte during his fourth SONA, drawing an applause from his audience at the Batasang Pambansa.
Although the planned academy was not discussed in detail during the SONA, Duterte’s statements should be a shot in the arm for Philippine sports more so since it rarely gets a mention from the President not just in the current administration but also in the past.
Aside from elite sports, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has been also focusing on grassroots sports development, part of the marching orders of Duterte to PSC chairman William Ramirez.
