CAGAYAN Valley registered its ninth straight win but went through the eye of the needle against Meralco before prevailing Friday night in the Shakey's V-League Season 10 Open Conference.
The Lady Rising Suns was tested to the hilt by the Power Spikers in their 25-14, 16-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13 win at The Arena in San Juan.
The perfect record of the league leader appeared ready for the picking after Meralco surged to a 5-0 lead in the final set of the tightly-fought contest.
But the Lady Rising Suns responded behind a 9-3 spurt to grab a 12-9 lead before Meralco tied the game for the last time at 13-all.
Meralco import Coco Wang failed her service attempt to give Cagayan a 14-13 lead after which Aiza Maizo made up for her previous miscues with her game winning attack to clinch it for Cagayan.
“Hindi naman ako kinabahan kanina kasi kahit anong mangyari nasa semis na rin naman,” said Cagayan coach Nes Pamilar. “Pero mas maganda pa rin 'yung tatapusin mo tong liga na wala kang talo.”
“Medyo hindi nila (Cagayan) sineseryoso 'yung laro, nagtatawanan na lang kasi. Ang sa akin lang laruin nila ng tama,” added the veteran mentor about the match that lasted for two hours and three minutes.
Meralco forced the deciding set behind Maica Morada and Maureen Penetrante-Ouano who had back-to-back blocks to position the Power Spikers at set point. Penetrante-Ouano then sealed the match for Meralco with a sounding kill.
Thai import Kannika Thipachot led the Lady Rising Suns with 28 points, while team captain Angge Tabaquero added 21, while Maizo had 16.
Cagayan topped the blocking department (7-5), but committed more errors (35-20).
The 6-foot-3 Wang, Meralco’s Chinese reinforcement, finished with 21 markers, while Morada had 12. Stephanie Mercado and Fille Cainglet chipped in 11 and 10, respectively for the Power Spikers.
Meralco absorbed their fourth straight loss dating back to the eliminations for a 3-6 record overall.
