Blue Thunder roll past Volley Masters for first win in Shakey's V-League

    Oct 12, 2014

RIZAL Technological University scored the last six points of the match to eke out a hard-earned  25-22, 25-27, 12-25, 29-27, 15-11 win over Instituto Estetico Manila in the men's division of the Shakey's V-League Season 11 Foreign Reinforced Conference at The Arena in San Juan on Sunday.

Alnasip Laja poured out a team-high 23 points, all from spikes, to lead the Blue Thunder to their maiden win in the tournament.

Sahud Masahud had 15, including RTU's last four points, while Sabtal Abdul added 10.

RTU evened its record at 1-1 to forge four-way logjam with its victim, Far Eastern University, and Systema Tooth and Gum Care (1-1).

“Naka-adjust na kami, pinanood namin 'yung tape at pinag-aralan namin ang mga weakness namin at pinagana namin ang depensa namin,” said RTU coach George Pascua.

“Kailangan lang ng teamwork, chemistry at magcombine ang skills sa attitude ng mga players,” he added.

Trailing by two in the fifth and final set after a 5-0 blitz by IEM, 9-11, RTU silenced the Phoenix Volley Masters by countering with its own 6-0 run to clinch the win.

Earlier, the Blue Thunder recovered from a sluggish third set as they survived a thrilling end in the fourth set.

Again staring at a two-point deficit, 22-24, Laja sparked a 4-0 spurt to give the Thunder the lead and move at set point, 25-24.

But Eden Canlas took charge for IEM and pushed the Phoenix Volley Masters at, 27-26.

RTU retaliated behind Masahud and Carlo Sebastian, 28-27, before an error by Jason Canlas handed the Blue Thunder the set.
