FAR Eastern University turned back University of Santo Tomas, 25-17, 25-17, 10-25, 25-20, in the opener of the V-League Collegiate Conference battle for third place on Saturday at The Arena in San Juan.
Bernadeth Pons scored 16 points, guest player Jovelyn Gonzaga had 11 markers while Toni Rose Basas and reinforcement Honey Royse Tubino combined for 14 points.
The second match of the best-of-three series is set next Saturday and the Lady Tamaraws are eager to bag the bronze and get some boost for their UAAP campaign.
“Malaking bagay para sa kompiyansa ng team na makuha pa rin yung third place going into the UAAP,” said assistant coach Arielito Canlas, who called the shots as Shaq de los Santos is still in Vietnam as an assistant for the Petron Blaze Spikers in the Asian Women’s Club Championship.
FEU failed to keep the momentum going and allowed UST to take the third set before recovering to seal the win in one hour and 49 minutes.
“Nag-relax kami sa third set. Sinabi ko sa mga bata na nawala yung intensity natin noong first at second set. Kaya doon sa fourth set sabi ko dapat higitan pa natin yung intensity natin sa simula,” said Canlas.
The Tigresses suffered their second straight loss after bowing to the Ateneo Lady Eagles on Wednesday in the deciding match of their semifinal series.
Pam Lastimosa and EJ Laure had 12 points each for UST.
