Spiker Jessey de Leon seeks perfect balance as she pursues dream to be architect

    Jul 14, 2017

JESSEY de Leon may have finished her stint as a student-athlete, but the balancing act continues as the former University of Santo Tomas spiker juggles her duties with her day job and her Premier Volleyball League club Pocari Sweat.

The 22-year-old de Leon is currently playing for the Lady Warriors this season, including last conference where they captured the Reinforced Conference crown after beating BaliPure in the finals.

But while playing for Pocari Sweat, De Leon is also working as a CAD Operator for an architectural firm in order to fulfill her requirements before she takes the Architect Licensure Exam.

"Nagwo-work ako as an apprentice for the board exams kasi I need two years of experience," she shared.

De Leon said she doesn't find such balancing act difficult to do, even though at times she takes off early from her work in Makati to catch Pocari Sweat's PVL matches at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

She also needs to balance her time for her personal life, but she remains motivated to excel in both roles as she pursues her dream to be an architect.

"Siyempre one day at a time kasi ngayon, kumukuha ako ng experience sa job tapos at the same time, playing for Pocari. Siguro you need to find motivation and ang importante, time management,” she said.

"Alam mo 'yung priorities mo. Since mahirap siya at nakakapagod, kailangan mag-draw ka ng strength from God at isipin mo lang, tiwala sa sarili at work hard," added De Leon.

Pocari’s strong bond and family atmosphere also contributed to her ease in balancing work and play.

"Family kami. Matuturing ko silang mga sisters ko, mga kapatid ko kasi nagtutulungan kami not only inside the court but outside," said De Leon.

Even with a hectic schedule, De Leon was glad to contribute for Pocari Sweat especially during last conference's finals series where she scored the title-winning point in Game Three.

"Masarap sa feeling kasi 'yung puwede ko ma-contribute sa team, nagawa ko," said De Leon.
