BAGUIO City grabbed first place in both the Batang Pinoy and Philippine National Games during the penultimate day of the competitions on Thursday.
The ‘City of Pines’ is in front of the Batang Pinoy medal tally with 17 golds, 16 silvers, and 28 bronzes, and in the PNG with its 11-6-5 gold-silver-bronze mark in the partial, unofficial count.
Baguio though has a slim lead in the BP over previous leaders Cebu City, which has 17-14-19, and in the PNG against Pasig City, which has collected 9-16-18.
Baguio actually ruled the Batang Pinoy in Ilocos Sur last year.
PNG, Batang Pinoy end on Friday
The Philippine Sports Commission’s flagship grassroots development competitions that drew a total of 18,000 athletes will end on Friday.
Baguio collected Batang Pinoy gold medals in taekwondo kyorugi courtesy of Rolyn Matthew Salay (cadet male first category), Zashter Khaine Mendoza (cadet make fourth category), Chezka Nicolette Luzadas (cadet female fourth category), and Joshua Aaron Erec (junior male finweight).
Ferrera dominates men's hammer throw
Former national athlete Arniel Ferrera led Baguio’s assault in the PNG after claiming the men’s hammer throw.
Baguio archers also showed the way with victories by Elizabeth Lay-At Bayla and John Pu Hongitan in the 720 round recurve master female and male respectively in the event backed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp, PBA, Milo, Pocari Sweat, and Chooks to Go.
