Women's soft tennis bronze medal breaks the ice at Asian Games

THE Philippines recorded its first medal of the 20th Asian Games, taking the bronze in the women’s team event in soft tennis at the Nagoya City Higashiyama Park Tennis Center.

The women’s team absorbed a 2-0 loss to Japan in the semifinals on Sunday morning, but it was enough to bag the bronze medal after making it to the Final Four for being in the top two at the end of the group stage.

Bien Zoleta and Princess Catindig lost to Rena Temma and Kiho Miyamae, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-0, 4-1, and Christy Sanosa was defeated by Ayaka Iwakura, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-2, 4-0.

Hilary Paas and Shyryn Salazar are also members of the women’s soft tennis team.

    The Philippines made it to the semifinals after wins over Mongolia, 3-0, and Southeast Asia rival Thailand, 2-1, in Group B. It finished the group with a 3-0 loss to Chinese Taipei, arranging a semifinal duel with Japan, which swept Group A with victories over Cambodia, Pakistan, and Korea.
