GREEN Archers United compounded Pasargad’s woes in the United Football League, scoring a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at the Emperador Stadium in Taguig.
Robert Mendy proved to be the biggest thorn in the relegation-threatened side as the Senegalese striker fired a brace for the second time in three games to lead the Archers, who maintained their hold of sixth spot with 26 points, just behind Pachanga on goal difference.
The Archers also solidified their chances of qualifying for the maiden UFL Super Cup after the League. Only the top six teams clinch berths to the season-ending knockout tournament.
Pasargad, on the other hand, remained at the bottom of the nine-team standings with six points, four behind eighth-running Socceroo, with just five games left to save the squad from getting demoted to Division 2.
Mendy put the Archers on the board with a conversion eight minutes into the game, but saw the Iranian-loaded squad erase the deficit in the 33rd minute when Akbari Sarabi equalized the count.
But Pasargad saw its celebration cut short as Mendy found the back of the net once again just five minutes later.
That proved to be the final score as Archers’ goalkeeper Patrick Deyto, fresh from his world-class save that preserved the Azkals’ scoreless draw against Malaysia last Sunday, prevented Pasargad from knotting the count anew in the second half.
