Chef De Mission Ritchie Garcia sees Philippines capable of winning seven golds in Asian Games

    Sep 18, 2014

INCHEON, South Korea --The Philippines has the potential of winning seven gold medals in the 2014 Asian Games.

Chef De Mission Richie Garcia reiterated his belief in the Filipino athletes after the team followed a stringent criteria that only potential top-five winners in Asia will be allowed to compete in the quadrennial meet.

Garcia clarified the seven-gold medal haul isn’t his ‘fearless forecast,’ but he does sees potential gold medal winners for the country after seeing the final list of the PH contingent.

“We have the potential to win more than that (seven gold medals). They have potentials and credentials, meaning they have the history to prove that they are gold medalist potentials,” said Garcia after the flag-raising ceremony formally announcing the entry of the Philippines in the Athletes’ Village.

Winning seven gold medals will mean surpassing the three-gold medal haul of the Philippines in the 2010 Asiad in Guangzhou, China

In a simple ceremony on a hot Thursday afternoon, Garcia, also chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), handed a Bayanihan sculpture to Asiad officials during the flag-raising ceremony attended by a handful of athletes including world windsurfing champion  Geylord Coveta – the one tasked to carry the Philippine flag in Friday night’s opening ceremonies at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.

Incidentally, Coveta is one of the potential athletes being considered to win a gold along with the high-profiled Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team, BMX cyclist Daniel Caluag, and several others from boxing, bowling, wushu, and taekwondo.

“We are very proud that our flag is up there and waiting for the athletes to come. With these athletes will come medals,” said Garcia.
