RICHARD Gomez will be appointed chef de mission of the Philippine delegation to the 2018 Asian Games, according to a source.
Gomez, the president of the fencing federation, will replace wushu secretary-general Julian Camacho, who submitted his courtesy resignation following Ricky Vargas' victory over Peping Cojuangco in the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) elections.
The actor/sportsman, who is also the mayor of Ormoc City, will be tasked to oversee the preparation and participation of the Philippines in the Asiad to be held in Indonesia.
The POC is set to hold a board meeting on Monday where an official turnover is scheduled. Key positions will also be filled, including the post of secretary-general which is expected to go to longtime Vargas lieutenant Pato Gregorio.
Meanwhile, in the Philippine Sports Commission, lawyer Sannah Frivaldo has stepped down as executive director of the government sports agency, according to a source.
