JAKARTA – The oldest athlete that will compete in the Asian Games is a Filipino.
His name is Kong Te Yang and he will be competing for the Philippines in bridge, a card game that will be making its debut in the quadrennial showpiece.
At 85 years old, Kong, according to an article by Asian Games News, is the oldest competitor. Kong is also one of three competitors in the Asiad who is aged 80 or more, the two others are also competing in bridge.
Lai Chun Ng of Singapore is the second oldest at 82, while Hung Fong Lee of Malaysia is 81.
The oldest Indonesian competitor is also a bridge player. But 79-year-old Bambang Hartonois is no ordinary competitor. Mambang is a tobacco, banking and telecommunications magnate with a net worth of US$16.7 billion.
Bridge was played in the 2011 Southeast Asian Games, with the Philippines collecting two gold medals. Indonesia won four gold medals.
