Philippines set to open Asiad bid after PH cagers' solid start

JAKARTA – The Philippines formally begins its campaign in the 2018 Asian Games in sports outside basketball on Sunday in Indonesia.

The Filipino athletes already started out the Asian Games with the Gilas national squad beating Kazakhstan by 37 points on Thursday, but other sports will now join the basketball team in the quest for gold.

Among the athletes that will compete on Sunday are from the men’s and women’s poomsae team, kicking off the taekwondo competitions at the Jakarta Convention Center at 9 a.m. (10 a.m. Manila time).

    Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Dustin Jacob Mella and Rodolfo Reyes Jr. will now team up with Jeordan Dominguez in the men’s event, while Juvenile Faye Crisostomo, Rinna Babanto, and Janna Dominique Oliva will see action in the women’s competition.

    The celebrated women’s volleyball team will also begin its campaign on Sunday at the GBK Volley Indoor at 12:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. Manila time), while the Blu Girls women’s softball team goes up against Hong Kong at 8 p.m. (9 p.m. Manila time).

    Aquatics action also starts at the GBK Aquatic Center with Roxanne Yu seeing action in the 200m backstroke.

    Over in Palembang, Hagen Topacio competes in the men’s trap.
