THE Philippine women’s soft tennis team has clinched a podium finish in the 20th Asian Games after winning their first two matches in the preliminary round at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center.
The Filipinas swept Mongolia, 3-0, and defeated Thailand, 2-1, to clinch one of the two semifinal berths in Group B of the women's team event, enough to secure at least a bronze medal.
The Nationals will tussle with Group A top-seed Japan in the semifinals after finishing Group B in second place. They ended the group stage with a 3-0 loss to Chinese Taipei.
Philippines Final Four-bound
In the tie against Mongolia, 2023 Southeast Asian Games women’s doubles champions Princess Catindig and Bien Zoleta defeated Khongorzul Ganbold and Enkhjin Amarjargal, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-2, 4-2.
Christy Sanosa also defeated Enkhkhuslen Ganbaatar, in the women’s singles, 4-1, 4-1, 5-3, 6-4; and Shyryn Salazar and Hilary Paas beat Namuunkhuslen Erdembileg and Anu-ujin Gantur, 5-3, 4-0, 4-2, 4-2, 4-0, in the other doubles matchup against Mongolia.
Catindig and Zoleta also beat Thanpitcha Somsanit and Praewa Jongit, 6-4, 6-4, 4-6, 2-4, 4-1, 6-4, 8-6, in the Thailand contest, with Sanosa winning over Chatcha Klomkamol, 4-0, 4-1, 6-4, 4-0. Salazar and Paas lost to Buntita Phoungprapa and Alisha Ziegler in a tight contest, 4-2, 4-2, 4-0, 12-0, 1-4, 3-5, 0-4, 4-1.
