KAYLA Sanchez’s campaign in the 20th Asian Games got off to the wrong foot after the Philippine women’s 4x100m freestyle was disqualified at the end of the race.
The three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist teamed up with Heather White, Xiandi Chua, and Teia Salvino in Day 1 of the swimming competition.
Sanchez got the Philippines to a strong start, placing second behind China after the first leg, but got a DSQ after getting a violation on the change-over between Chua and Salvino.
“Too early take off,” said Philippine Aquatics Inc. secretary general Eric Buhain to POC Media Pool. “Napaaga. Nagka-gap between touch of Xiandi and pag take-off ng paa ni Teia.”
Sanchez’s swim in the first leg, however, provided the silver lining as she is scheduled to compete in the 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle, 4x100m medley relay, and 4x200m freestyle relay.
China won the gold with a new Games record of three minutes, 33.10 seconds set by Yu Yiting, Zhang Yufei, Cheng Yujie, and Wu Qifeng. They broke the previous mark by .86 seconds set in the last Asiad in Hangzhou also owned by China.
