THE Philippines improved to 14th place in the medal standings of the 20th Asian Games after Carlos and Eldrew Yulo closed the men’s artistic gymnastics competitions on Friday with medals.
Carlos Yulo and the Philippines earned a second gold medal in these Games with a gold medal in the vault in a close victory over Mahdi Olfati of Iran, 14.599 to 14.533.

Yulo’s brother Eldrew, meantime, closed his Asian Games debut with a bronze medal in the horizontal bar with a score of 14.333, winning a tiebreak over Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan due to a better execution score of 8.566.
After the triumph of the Yulos, the Philippines closed Day 6 with a 2-2-5 gold-silver-bronze tally to jump up the medal tally after being in 20th place after Thursday’s play.

Gilas Pilipinas Women of Kacey Dela Rosa, Kennan Ka, Amyah Espanol, and Mavi Pasilang lost to Japan, 21-11, in the 3x3 final but nevertheless captured a silver medal to an already notable campaign in the Asiad.
But the men’s side of Nic Cabanero, Luis Pablo, Doy Dungo, and Koji Buenaflor lost to Iran, 21-10, to miss out on the bronze medal.
In other results, Junmilardo Ogayre advanced to the men’s boxing 60kg quarterfinals after beating Khagendera Roka Magar of Nepal via unanimous decision after Risa Pasuit lost to Natnicha Chongprongklang of Thailand, 5-0, in the women’s 54kg round of 16.
Elreen Ando finished fifth in the women’s weightlifting 61kg after a total lift of 224 kilograms.
Paris Olympic bronze medalist Nesthy Petecio (women’s boxing 60kg), Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Carlo Paalam (men's boxing 55kg), and Albert Ian Delos Santos (men’s weightlifting 70kg) are among the notable Filipino athletes in action on Saturday.
China approaches the century mark with 98 gold medals, with host Japan at far second with 28. South Korea is in third with 13, with Kazakhstan (8), and Uzbekistan (7) rounding out the top 5.
