AFTER a 0-8 hole early on, Calvin Oftana kept Gilas Pilipinas within striking distance against Bahrain, 49-43, at halftime on Friday at the start of the 20th Asian Games men’s basketball tournament at the Aichi International Arena.
Oftana, a late replacement for Justin Brownlee, had 14 points in the first half, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, to help the Philippines come back from a deficit as high as 10 early in the second quarter.
Gilas, however, gave up eight straight points right before halftime, punctuated by back-to-back threes by Uros Ilic and JaKarr Sampson.
