JAKARTA – Meggie Ochoa captured a bronze medal in ju-jitsu after beating compatriot Kaila Napolis in the 18th Asian Games at the Jakarta Convention Center.

Ochoa settled for the bronze after losing to eventual gold medalist Duong Thi Thanh Minh of Vietnam in the quarterfinals. She beat Munkhgerel Bayarmaa of Mongolia in the repechage before winning over Napolis in the battle for the bronze.

Ochoa, seen as one of the gold-medal contenders for the Philippines, admitted she has mixed feelings about beating a teammate for the bronze - the sixth for the country to go with the lone gold courtesy of weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz.

“Ngayon po, meron po akong mixed feelings kasi ang kalaban ko nung bronze was my teammate and we are very good friends. It doesn’t look good beating your teammate but I’m happy na may bronze medal ang Philippines," she said.

“Although gusto ko na gold ang ma-deliver, iba ang plano ng Diyos. Nagtitiwala ako sa plano ng Diyos and hindi gold ang plano niya sa akin ngayon. Alam ko na meron pa mas magandang susunod."

Ochoa started out her campaign with a win over Yasmeen Alkhatib of Jordan, before beating Siramol Deepudsa in the round-of-16.

“I beat her before but she knew what I was going to do. Siya naman ang nag-surprise sa akin. She did something that I didn’t expect. Nahuli niya ako doon,” said Ochoa.

Napolis reached the semifinals after beating an opponent from United Arab Emirates before bowing to Jessa Khan of Cambodia.
