JAKARTA – The Philippine women’s volleyball team faces a daunting task against Olympic champion China on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 18th Asian Games women’s volleyball tournament at the GBK Tennis Indoor.
The match is scheduled at 7 p.m. (8 p.m. Jakarta time).
The Nationals have been using the Asian Games to gain more exposure in international play and they can expect world-class competition from China, which captured the gold in the Rio Olympics two years ago.
Zhu Ting will be leading the way for China. The top Chinese spiker had 25 points during the gold medal match in Rio against Serbia.
Head coach Shaq delos Santos said the team will be taking advantage of the opportunity to build the national team program.
“It’s not every day that we would be able to face China so it’s really an honor to play with them in the quarterfinals,” said delos Santos.
The Philippines lost to Indonesia, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, on Saturday to finish the preliminaries with a 1-3 record, but the record was still good enough to give the team a place in the quarterfinals.
“We know that we are just in the early stage of our volleyball program. So whatever experience we will gain against an elite team like China will be a major help to our program moving forward,” said delos Santos.
