JAKARTA – Mario Fernandez of the Philippines suffered a third-round knockout loss to Al Sudani Jaafar Abdulridha Ali of Iraq in Saturday’s men’s boxing competition.
A bronze medalist in the 2014 Asiad, Fernandez was leading on the scorecards going into the third round of his men’s bantamweight round-of-32 bout only to succumb to a devastating knockout punch that ended the bout.
Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines secretary general Ed Picson said Fernandez is out of danger.
“According to doctors, he’s okay but they want to make sure so they brought him to a medical center for observation,” Picson said.
Boxing continues on Sunday for the Philippines with 2016 Rio Olympian Rogen Ladon, James Palicte and Irish Magno seeing action.
