MARESTELLA Torres-Sunang bagged a bronze medal to avert a shutout for Team Philippines on Tuesday in the Asian Beach Games in Danang, Vietnam.
Torres-Sunang finished third in the women’s long jump of the beach athletics event after jumping 6.1 meters, which fell .01 short of the effort of silver medalist Nguyen Thi Truc Mai of Vietnam. Bui Thi Thu Thao of Vietnam got the gold with a jump of 6.32 meters.
Sunang, who is coming off her third Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, was the lone medalist for the Philippines which remained in ninth spot in the medal standings with a 2-1-10 gold-silver-bronze output.
Annie Ramirez, seeking another medal after winning the gold in the jiu-jitsu women’s -55kg division, lost in her quarterfinal match in the open division.
The women’s 3x3 basketball team, however, advanced to the quarterfinals after beating Mongolia, 16-11.
