THE PHILIPPINE baseball team hacked out a 12-0 win after seven innings over Palestine in the 20th Asian Games at the Toyohashi Municipal Baseball Stadium.
Romeo Jasmin struck out seven batters in a six-inning start, while Bong Liguayan hammered a grand slam to right field in a five-run sixth inning in the game that was halted under the mercy rule.
Strong Philippines start
The Pinoy batters, reigning Southeast Asian Games and East Asia Cup champions, started the match-up with a four-run binge to put their Group A game away early.
The Philippines now prepares for the tougher matches against Asian giants China on Tuesday and Japan on Wednesday.
Four-time defending champion Korea, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and Hong Kong are in the other group.
The two best teams in each of the two groups will play in the super round to continue the battle for medals.
The remaining teams in the group will continue playing for the best finish possible in the placement round.
