GILAS Pilipinas Women will face Chinese Taipei in the quarterfinals of the 20th Asian Games basketball competition which will be held on Thursday at the Aichi International Arena.
The Philippines got a considerably favorable draw in their road to a medal in facing Chinese Taipei, instead of South Korea, that will tipoff at 4 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Manila time), although head coach BT Toews is expected to keep the team on its toes in the quarterfinals match.
A draw was held in accordance with the tournament format that stated that the No. 3 and No. 4 team will play either the No. 5 or No. 6 at the end of the group stage.
South Korea finished third in the tournament followed by Chinese Taipei at fourth, Philippines at fifth, and Indonesia at sixth.
The Philippines avoided an early quarterfinal showdown with South Korea, which kept all but one player in their recent stint in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin a few weeks ago.
Korea also won a bronze in the Hangzhou Asian Games, its road to the medal included a quarterfinal rout against Gilas Women, 93-71.
The Philippines will look to advance to the semifinals for only the second time after it made it to the final four during the maiden tournament in 1974 where they lost to China in the bronze medal match.
Since then, the Philippines only competed in the Asiad women’s basketball in 1998 and 2023, missing the semifinals on both occasions.
The winner of the Philippines-Chinese Taipei pairing will go up against either Japan or Thailand.
China takes on Mongolia, the winner meeting either South Korea or Indonesia.
