THE Philippines is bracketed in Group B with Middle East countries Iran, Syria, and United Arab Emirates in the 2018 Asian Games men’s basketball tournament in Jakarta, following the draw ceremony on Thursday.
With the result, Gilas Pilipinas will once again be bracketed with Iran, after they were also in the same group four years ago during the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea.
Gilas lost to Iran during their preliminary match where the Philippines finished seventh in the men’s basketball tournament.
Iran eventually won the silver after losing to South Korea in the final.
South Korea, the reigning gold medalist, is bracketed in Group A with Mongolia, Indonesia, and Thailand, while Japan, Qatar, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong are in Group C.
Kazakhstan, China, and Palestine were in Group D.
Gilas Pilipinas, however, is in the midst of controversy as nine players are facing sanctions from Fiba following their role in the brawl during the Fiba World Cup Asian qualifiers.
Five players in Andray Blatche, Terrence Romeo, Jayson Castro, Troy Rosario, and RR Pogoy are part of the Asian Games lineup.
