Gilas holding on to hope of Brownlee showing up at Asian Games

SLIM as the chance may be, Gilas Pilipinas has nonetheless kept a spot open for Justin Brownlee in its campaign at the 20th Asian Games.

Coach Tim Cone disclosed the team is hoping against hope the 38-year-old naturalized player shows up and play for the Gilas in the quadrennial meet where the Philippines is the defending men’s basketball champion.

“We’re hoping there’s a chance Justin might come in. It’s not confirmed,” said the 68-year-old mentor. “But he’s intending to come, that we know. We just never know.”

The Gilas pool, made up exclusively of PBA players, leaves on Wednesday for a brief, three-day camp in Korea before joining the rest of the Philippine delegation in Nagoya for the Asiad.

Hampered by an assortment of injuries to his hamstring and knees, the resident Barangay Ginebra import was forced to skip the recent fourth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers.

Nonetheless, Gilas managed to overcome his absence by scoring two all-important wins over Jordan and Iran to keep the Philippines’ bid for a berth in the World Cup alive.
