PHILIPPINE Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Ricardo Garcia will have an additional title under his name when the country participates in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, Korea.

Garcia is going to be the chef de mission of the Philippine delegation to the biggest sporting meet in the region after he was officially named to the position by Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president Jose `Peping’ Cojuangco on Monday.

He became the first chairman of the government sports agency to be named as such since William `Butch’ Ramirez assumed the post during the 2005 Southeast Asian Games which the country hosted.

Garcia, who will be in charge of overseeing both the preparations and participations of the Filipino athletes to the quadrennial meet, thanked Cojuangco for his trust in appointing him to such a sensitive job.

“I feel honored at saka nagpapasalamat ako kay Cong (Peping) na binigay niya sa akin. Maraming mga tao diyan na maybe more than qualified, pero binigay niya sa akin ‘yung pinaka-importanteng laro katulad ng Asian Games,” Garcia said.

“As much as possible, we want to identify athletes na qualified para ma-train early instead of last minute na, tapos training for, say, two months lang,” said Garcia, the deputy chef de mission in Doha three years ago.

Garcia served as the country’s chef de mission during the 2009 Asian Indoor Games.
