THE Filipinas absorbed a 5-1 loss to China on Monday at the Gifu Nagaragawa Stadium to close the group stage of the 20th Asian Games women’s football.
The Philippines dropped to third place with four points (1-1-1 win-draw-loss) in Group G following the loss to China and a late goal from Uzbekistan in its 2-1 win over Hong Kong to steal second place with five points (1-2-0).
The Filipinas ended up taking one of the two best third placers of the tournament, where they could end up facing host and reigning champion Japan again in the quarterfinals scheduled on Friday at the Shizuoka Stadium.
Japan routed the Philippines, 8-1, in the quarterfinals in the Hangzhou Asian Games on their way to the gold medal.
Japan is on pace to take first place in Group E ahead of its final match of the group stage against Chinese Taipei later in the day.
Hali Long played her 109th cap in the loss, surpassing Phil Younghusband for most number of international matches by a Philippine player.
China took first spot in Group G with a sweep of the group stage.
Wang Yanwen had a hat trick with goals in the 20th, 40th, and 54th, with Chen Qiaozhu also scoring in the 49th.
Skye Leach scored her second Asiad goal in the 65th but China padded the lead on a stoppage time goal by Yuan Cong.
