DOUBLE gold is now out of the picture for Alex Eala.
Eala and partner Shaira Rivera saw their women’s doubles campaign cut short in the second round after falling to China’s Jiang Xinyu and Yang Zhaoxuan, 5-7, 2-6, on Wednesday night at the 20th Asian Games.
The defeat came just hours after Eala secured a spot in the women’s singles semifinals, keeping her bid for an individual gold medal alive.
The Filipinas were locked at 5-all in the opening set before the Chinese pair pulled away, winning the next two games to take the early advantage.
Jiang and Yang then carried the momentum into the second set, winning four straight games to break away from a 1-all deadlock and take a commanding 5-1 lead.
Eala and Rivera managed to stop the run and take another game, but the Chinese pair quickly closed out the match to end the Filipinas’ doubles campaign.
Eala remains in contention for gold in singles, where she is assured of at least a bronze medal after reaching the semifinals.
