PRESIDENT Duterte has given an additional P2 million in incentives each to the gold medalists who won in the 18th Asian Games.

Duterte bared during the turnover of cash incentives from the government to Asian Games medalists at Malacañang Palace on Wednesday that he has directed the Philippine Sports Commission to give additional incentives to the medalists.

Though Duterte didn’t explicitly say the amount during his speech, the PSC, in a media bulletin, said the Chief Executive has added P2 million for the gold medalists' incentive package.

The funds will come from the PSC, which is under the Office of the President.

“I have already directed the PSC to provide additional incentives to be sourced from its funds to the winning individuals of the 18th Asian Games,” said Duterte.

With Duterte’s announcement, an Asian Games gold medalist is now entitled to P8 million in incentives, with P2 million from the government, P2 million from the Philippine Olympic Committee, P1 million from Presidential Adviser for Sports Dennis Uy, and P1 million from Philippine ambassador to Indonesia Cesar Lee Hiong Tan Wee.

On Wednesday, only the incentives stated in Republic Act 10699 were given away. Under the said law, an Asian Games gold medalist receives P2 million, silver medalist P1 million, and bronze medalist P400,000. Also under the said law, if the medalist is a team event, the amount will be divided among the members of the squad.

As far as incentives from the government is concerned, golfer Yuka Saso got the highest amount of incentives as she gets P4 million for winning the individual gold and an additional P1.3 million for winning the team event (assuming that the incentive of Duterte will also be split into three).
