JAKARTA – Dines Dumaan and Jefferson Rhay Loon settled for bronze medals in pencak silat following their losses in the semifinals on Sunday in the 18th Asian Games at the Pandepokan Pencak Silat here.
Dumaan, the reigning Asian and Southeast Asian champion, lost to Muhammad Faizul M Nasir of Malaysia, 5-0, in the men’s Class B 50kg to 55kg semifinal, while Loon dropped a 5-0 decision to Nguyen Ngoc Toan of Vietnam in the men’s Class D 60kg to 65kg division.
By reaching the semifinals though, Dumaan and Loon were able to give the Philippines two more bronze medals.
On Saturday, Dumaan guaranteed himself a bronze with a win over an Indian opponent, while Loon beat foes from Timor Leste and Kyrgyzstan on the way to the semis.
Loon lost on all scores of the five juries, 8-12-12-6-10, compared to Nguyen, who posted 22-26-20-17-21.
Dines had 14-9-8-11-15 in three rounds of sparring, while Nasir scored of 17-16-13-14 and 18.
Meanwhlie, Cherry May Regalado will shoot for the gold medal on Monday when she competes in the medal round of pencak silat’s form event.
