JAKARTA – The Philippines had to deal with the outstanding effort of Aprilia Manganang, who dominated the game for Indonesia in its win on Saturday night in the 18th Asian Games.
Manangang had 28 points for Indonesia in its 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22 win over the Philippines on Saturday before a packed crowd at the GBK Tennis Indoor.
Philippine libero Dawn Macandili admitted Manangang posed a different challenge for the team as she attacks with force in the match.
“Honestly, medyo challenging siya kasi siyempre, mataas ‘yung talon niya at baon siya pumalo. Kailangan extra effort ‘yung pagbasa ng bola,” said Macandili.
The predominantly Indonesian crowd roared on every score of Manangang, coming through on offense each and every time the Philippines gain momentum and close the gap against Indonesia in the match.
Macandili, though, showed her ‘Ms. Everywhere’ label when she had 12 digs in the game against Indonesia.
“Siyempre every game, extra effort naman tayo,” said Macandili.
The Philippines won a set against its Southeast Asian rival, an achievement that Macandili said will once again be another learning experience as the country builds its national team program.
“I think it’s a learning experience. Lahat naman ng games namin, may matututunan kami. Sa team, kailangan namin ma-absorb ‘yun and take it to the next level,” Macandili said.
