JAKARTA – The Philippines will have one last crack at a gold medal in the penultimate day of the 18th Asian Games.
Flyweight Rogen Ladon beat Thailand’s Yuttapong Tongdee on Friday to reach the finals against Jasurbek Latipov of Uzbekistan, giving him a shot at a fifth gold medal for Team Philippines in this conclave.
While Ladon will fight for the gold at Jakarta International Expo on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. (3:15 p.m. Manila time), two other Filipino boxers in light-fly Carlo Paalam and middleweight Eumir Marcial lost in their semifinal matches and settled for the bronze.
As the 18th Asiad enters its final day, the Philippines is in 19th in the medal tally with 4-1-15 gold-silver-bronze.
The Philippine men’s basketball team finished in fifth place after a 109-55 win over Syria, giving Jordan Clarkson a fitting send-off before he returns to the United States to prepare for the NBA season.
In sailing, Geylord Coveta placed sixth in the 470 men’s race, and eighth in the RS:X men’s race while the women’s volleyball team lost a five-setter to Kazakhstan, setting up a battle for seventh spot with host Indonesia.
In Palembang, Kim Mangrobang emerged as the best Southeast Asian finisher in triathlon after placing seventh. Kim Kilgore took ninth spot.
