CERES-LA Salle and Kaya FC accomplished in the local league what they nearly did in the Asian Football Confederation Cup, while Global FC also prevailed as the three heavyweights dispatched respective rivals in the United Football League Cup on Saturday night.
Coming off a 2-2 draw against Selangor in the AFC Cup last Tuesday, Ceres got over the hump as the reigning league champion held off Green Archers United, 3-2, to move closer to securing the top seed in Group B
Stephan Schrock, Lee Jeong Woo, and Bien Marañon struck for the quarterfinals-bound Ceres, which hiked its point total to 12 after remaining unbeaten after four matches, while keeping the Archers stuck with six points.
On the other hand, Kaya, which lost a close 1-0 decision to Kitchee in its international debut, vented its ire on JP Voltes with a 4-0 shutout win behind a brace by Robert Lopez Mendy and a goal each from Kenshiro Daniels and Jovin Bedic.
As a result, the defending Cup winner gained a provisional hold of top spot in Group A with nine points, ahead on goal difference over Stallion FC, which still has a match on hand.
Global, for its part, blanked Loyola Meralco, 2-0, in a marquee matchup that capped off a blockbuster tripleheader at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The former league champion, who banked on goals from Arthur Kouassi and Omid Nazari, thus kept in step with Ceres after improving to nine points, while also booking a ticket, like Kaya, in the knockout phase.
