CARLO Paalam scored a razor-thin split decision over Makhmud Sabyrkhan of Kazakhstan to advance to the gold-medal match of the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan on Wednesday.

The Filipino Olympian needed to win the third and final round of their fiercely fought semifinal in the men’s 55kg class to win the bout at the Nishio gymnasium, 3-2.

By making the finals, Paalam stayed on track of ending the Philippines’ 16-year gold medal drought in Asiad boxing.

Yamaguchi, 28, won the other semifinals pairing against Bilguunsaikhan Kharhuu of Mongolia, 5-0.
