Alyssa Valdez deflects credit to setter Jia Morado after 37-point night in PVL

    Jul 6, 2017

ALYSSA Valdez was on fire in the volleyball court as she exploded for 37 points, her second highest output, on Wednesday as Creamline survived BaliPure, 25-20, 28-30, 25-19, 31-29, in the Premier Volleyball League Open Conference.

But the tireless Creamline star was in a playful mood right after the thrilling match that took two hours and three minutes to finish, joking with reporters to head home as it was a little past 9 in the evening.

Turning serious, Valdez deflected the credit for her scoring outburst to her reunion with former Ateneo teammate Jia Morado, who played together in the UAAP for three seasons.

“I think more than anything talaga, siyempre very excited din ako to team up with Jia again and all the players so very eager ako to contribute,” said Valdez, who holds the second highest scoring record in the 14-year-old league with 39 points.

The pride of San Juan, Batangas, as always, credited Morado not only for bringing out the best in her game but also for the rest of the Cool Smashers.

“Honestly si Jia very composed siya sa loob ng court. Siya talaga ang nagli-lead sa amin throughout the game and kahit anong mangyari may tiwala at magtitiwala pa rin siya sa’yo,” said Valdez.

“Siguro yun ang isang character, attitude ng isang setter na kailangan mo rin talaga.,” she added. “‘Yung setter mo ayaw mong mawalan ng tiwala sa’yo kaya bakit ka mawawalan ng tiwala sa sarili mo?”

Valdez was three points away from matching Pocari Sweat import Michelle Strizak’s record of 40 points in this year’s Reinforced Conference.
