MANAMA, Bahamas – Alas Pilipinas made short work of Hong Kong to finish No. 2 in its pool at the end of the quarterfinals classification in the 3rd Asian Youth Games here.
The Philippines' U18 team leaned on the 14 points of Sam Cantada in pulling off the 25-15, 28-26, 25-11 win on Friday night at the Isa Sports City.
The win was the second sweep in a row for the Filipinos following a similar victory over China – its first ever against the powerhouse - the other day to finish with a 2-1 record for second-place in Pool F behind top seed Thailand.
The Thais also swept the Chinese, 25-18, 25-12, 25-17, to finish at the top of their pool with a perfect 3-0 record.
Alas turns attention to Chinese Taipei
Finishing No. 2 meant a quarterfinals showdown with Pool E No. 3 Chinese Taipei, which ended up with a 1-2 record.
“Sa ngayon, siyempre po we have to celebrate our wins para doon din po kasi kami makakakuha ng kumpiyansa sa panalo po namin,” said the UAAP juniors MVP while still playing for Adamson.
The quarterfinals is set on Sunday at the same venue.
Pool E top-notcher Iran (3-0) will face winless Hong Kong (0-3) in the knockout phase, while No. 2 Indonesia (2-1) takes on China (1-2). The other quarters pairing will have Thailand clashing with Qatar (0-3).
