THE Philippines overpowered Brunei, 142-19, at the start of the boys basketball competitions of the 10th Asean School Games at the Gem-In Mall in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
The Filipino team, composed mostly of players from UAAP side National University, blanked Brunei, 36-0, in the first period on their way to the 123-point lopsided win.
New NU recruit Harold Alarcon had 26 points including 11 in the first half to set the tone. Vince Cuajao of Holy Child Davao had 22 points for the Philippines, which also got 21 points from Cyril Gonzales.
Gerry Abadiano had 14 points, while fellow Batang Gilas cager Carl Tamayo didn’t play for the Philippines in the contest due to an injury he sustained in the Fiba Under-17 Basketball World Cup.
Only four players scored in double figures for Brunei.
The Philippines faces Singapore on Monday.
