AARON Gumban claimed the first gold in athletics of the 2019 Batang Pinoy Mindanao leg at the Davao Del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City.
The 14-year-old Gumban, from The Sto. Tomas, Davao Del Norte, won the 13-15 boys’ 5,000-meter run in the regional meet for the second straight time, clocking 17 minutes and 14 seconds.
Lordy Salpid of General Santos City was second in 19:05.07, and Rome Laviste Jr. of Davao Del Sur was third in 19:12.66.
Gumban now vows to go for the gold in the national finals in October after an injury setback last year.
“I competed in the national finals, but I didn’t finish the race. Now, I have another chance and I will do my best to win,” said the Grade 8 student from Sto. Tomas National High School.
Birthday girl Mary Joy Mancera of Davao Del Sur had a double celebration on Thursday, winning the 13-15 girls’ discus throw with a 26.28-m heave.
The 15-year-old Mancera beat Avril Saucejo of Mati (23.49) and Kristal Molina of Davao City (19.85).
John Carlo Loreno captured his sixth gold medal in archery on Thursday, teaming up with Precious Micah Basadre in the cadet mixed team event.
John Alexander Talosig captured four gold medals in swimming as the 14-year-old Southern Christian College, ruling the boys 13-15 200-m and 1,500-m freestyle and the 200- and 400-m individual medley.
