INCOMING 1Pacman party list representative Mikee Romero on Tuesday made a bold call for all sports officials to step down and make way for a more vibrant leadership for Philippine sports.
Speaking in Tuesday’s Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Forum, Romero said now is the time for a complete change in Philippine sports, which has generally struggled in the international front.
“With apologies and respect to our sports leaders, I’m calling all of them to give way to a new breed of sports leaders,” said Romero.
Romero recently won a seat in Congress through the 1Pacman party list during the May 9 elections where one of his platforms is to improve the state of Philippine sports.
Romero admitted that even though most of the sports officials are his friends, the owner of the GlobalPort team in the PBA said their track record speak volumes on why change is needed.
“Again, I love sports and the Philippines. I’m friends with most of them pero kailangan mangibabaw ‘yung pagiging nationalistic natin sa Phiilippine sports. And again, I call all our sports leaders to step down and move aside because their time has lapsed already,” Romero said.
“Kung iisipin mo, masasaktan ko sila as my friends, but on the other hand, they are also hurting Philippine sports. Kailangang mangibabaw ‘yung pag-iisip mo na you had time to make changes and you did not,” he added.
Romero, who once was the president of the cycling and shooting associations, said he can’t accept the current performance of Philippine sports where the country placed in the bottom half in the medal tally of the Southeast Asian Games.
“Sa SEA Games, seventh tayo. Sa Asian Games, halos wala na tayong nakukuhang medalya. Sa Olympics ngayon, kung saling pusa lang tayo sa lahat, eh siguro may malaki tayong problema,” said Romero.
