BANTAY, Ilocos Sur — Princes Sheryl Valdez of SOCCSKSARGEN wants to be a policewoman someday, and she began to show potential based on her golden sweep in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa arnis competitions.

The 11-year-old Valdez on Tuesday won her fifth gold medal in the elementary girls division, sweeping all of her arnis events held at the San Vicente Municipal Gym in San Vicente, Ilocos Sur.

Valdez said she took up arnis so that she can learn self-defense, which will eventually pave the way for her to reach her dream of being a member of the police force just like her grandfather.

“Para po self defense. Gusto ko po maging pulis kasi gagayahin ko po ‘yung lolo ko,” said Valdez.

The Tacurong City native won Tuesday’s anyo team event solo baton, and the mixed double identical weapon event, adding to the anyo event individual single weapon, anyo event individual double weapon, and espada y daga mints.

Valdez surpassed her mark of three golds in last year’s Palarong Pambansa in Antique.
