AS the Palarong Pambansa celebrates its 60th edition, the Department of Education bared plans for a first-ever Parangal Achievement Award that will honor a standout athlete who traces his roots to the country’s national games.

Education assistant secretary Tonisito Umali said they will give the prestigious honor this year in Antique to a notable product of the Palarong Pambansa who went on to a successful athletic career.

The award is meant to inspire the young Palaro athletes, he added.

Umali said the DepEd has alredy chosen from a short list of athletes who will be given the award. He didn’t bare the identity of the athlete but Umali said the recipient will be a legend of Philippine sports.

Umali added the recipient will also be given P50,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Antique to personally receive the award in the opening ceremony of the games on April 23.
