Mario Fernandez defeats Indian boxer to reach bantamweight semis and secure at least a bronze medal
Mario Fernandez defeats the Asian Championships gold medalist from India and will next faces the Asiad silver medalist from China.

INCHEON, Korea—Mario Fernandez scored a unanimous decision over Shiva Thapa of India on Tuesday to advance to the semifinal of the men’s bantamweight division and clinch at least a bronze medal in the Asian Games boxing competitions at the Seonhak Gymnasium.

The 21-year-old Fernandez won, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27, over the Indian boxer, who won the gold in the Asian Championship in Amman, Jordan last year.

The Filipino fighter can secure a silver medal on Thursday when he battles Zhang Jiawei of China, silver medalist in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Kairat Yeraliyev of Kazakhstan will face Sangmyeong Ham of Korea in the other semifinal.

Light flyweight Mark Anthony Barriga and middleweight Wilfredo Lopez will also vie for semifinal spots in the evening session on Tuesday.
