Hannah Dato claims silver in 100 free for seventh medal as Philippines places fifth in Asean University Games

HANNAH Dato bagged the silver medal in the women's 100-meter freestyle on Sunday in Palembang, Indonesia to cap the Philippines’ most successful Asean University Games campaign in six years.

The UAAP Season 77 swimming MVP clocked 58.06 as Malaysia's Chui Lai Kwan clinched the gold with 57.97, while Thailand's Benjaporn Sriphanomthorn took the bronze in 58.12.

The Filipino student-athletes won 10 gold, 11 silver and 22 bronze medals in fifth place behind host Indonesia (64-77-45), Thailand (52-34-23), Malaysia (38-39-49) and Vietnam (24-14-2).

Ateneo star Dato also went home with the bronze medal in the women's 200-meter butterfly event with a time of 2:22.62.

"I wasn't really expecting it," said Dato, Team UAAP-Philippines’ best performer with three gold, two silver and two bronze medals, in a Facebook message.

Another Ateneo swimming standout, Jessie Khing Lacuna, bagged the bronze medal in the lung-busting men's 1,500-meter freestyle event with a time of 16:47.15.

The Filipino tankers ended their five-day stint with four gold, three silver and nine bronze medals to end up Team UAAP-Philippines’ second most successful squad behind the taekwondo jins, who had a 4-4-4 gold-silver-bronze haul.

It was Team UAAP-Philippines' best campaign in the biennial regional competition for student-athletes since the 2008 edition in Kuala Lumpur, when the country went home with eight golds, 12 silvers and 21 bronzes to finish in sixth spot. 

The Filipinos had two gold, three silver and bronze medals in athletics, one silver and four bronzes in diving, and a bronze in women's volleyball.
