Gilas keeps slim semis hopes alive as Kazakshtan upsets Qatar

INCHEON, South Korea - Gilas Pilipinas kept its slim semifinal hopes alive in the 17th Asian Games here after Kazakhstan shocked Qatar, 65-57, Saturday night at the Hwaseong Sports Complex.

Coach Chot Reyes and the rest of the his team obviously got their wish and remain in contention for a medal after the Kazakhs took control in the second half to beat the erstwhile undefeated Qataris.

Qatar beat Gilas on Friday at the start of the quarterfinals, 77-68.

Gilas now needs to beat Kazakhstan on Sunday (2:15 p.m. Manila time) with the hopes of forging a three-way tie for second place among the nationals, Kazakhs, and Qataris.

The Philippines, however, need to win by more than 10 points and hopes Qatar loses to Korea also on Sunday to clinch the No. 2 spot in their group.

Kazakhstan will clinch the no. 2 spot if it wins by a single digit and Korea beats Qatar.

Dmitriy Gavrilov finished with 22 points to lead the Kazakhs in the victory against the Qataris, who only needs to win against undefeated Korea on Sunday (6:45 p.m. Manila time) to make the semis.
