DAVAO Del Norte is more than determined now to promote peace in the province through the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa given the recent killings of 44 members of the PNP-Special Action Forces by the MILF.

Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario said Davaoenos want to prove peace can be achieved through sports as the province plans to hold the best Palaro possible that will feature the best elementary and high school athletes competing against each other.

“Given the recent turn of events, we are determined more than ever to showcase this prestigious event as the universal language of sports in breaking down barriers in uniting our people and in fostering peace,” said Del Rosario on Wednesday during a press conference at the Department of Education (DepEd) office in Pasig City for Davao’s hosting of the annual summer event.

Del Rosario’s statements came in the wake of the massacre of 44 SAF members following an encounter with the MILF in Mamasapano, Maguindanao just two days ago.

Also held during the press conference was the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement between DepEd and the Davao Del Norte government as witnessed by Del Rosario and secretary Bro. Armin Luistro.

Tagum City serves as the main hub of the meet to be held from May 3 to 9.

Luistro said the MoA signing was timely in the heels of the Mamasapano incident as the region is determined to prove Mindanao can stage a big sporting event in the magnitude of the Palaro.

“Sa kalagitnaan ng agam-agam, ngayon po natin minarapat pirmahan ang pag-hohost ng Davao Del Norte sa Palarong Pambansa,” said Luistro.

Del Rosario said the Davao Del Norte government is in support of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

“And it goes without saying that we hail this sporting event as a golden opportunity for the people of Mindanao to pull together as one in rallying behind the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.

This Palaro will not only glorify sports but will unify all Mindanaoans, as well, in rallying support of the whole country for the passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law. So that we can finally attain the elusive peace in the island, which has been wallowing in decades-long conflict,” said the governor.
