GEORGE Russell stormed to the first pole position of the 2026 FIA Formula 1 World Championship after a chaotic qualifying session at Albert Park in Melbourne.

The Mercedes driver clocked a blistering 1:18.518 to secure his eighth career pole, navigating a session riddled with red flags and incidents across Q1 and Q3.

The result also marked Mercedes’ first pole position in Australia since Lewis Hamilton achieved the feat years earlier, and the 250th pole for Mercedes-AMG as an engine manufacturer.

Qualifying drama began early as four-time world champion Max Verstappen crashed out in Q1 after locking his rear axle into Turn 1 and slamming into the barriers, eliminating the Red Bull driver before the fight for pole truly began.

Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, recovered from a heavy crash in final practice to make qualifying, only to face fresh trouble in Q3 when a cooling device was mistakenly left attached to his car as he exited the pit lane.

The equipment fell onto the track, triggering another red flag and placing Mercedes under FIA investigation.

When the session resumed, Russell immediately seized control.

His first flying lap in Q3, a 1:19.084, placed him half a second clear of reigning world champion Lando Norris. Switching to fresh soft tyres, Russell improved again to a pole-winning 1:18.518.

Antonelli nearly produced a miracle response, finishing just three tenths behind with a 1:18.811 to secure a front-row start.

With Verstappen absent and down to P20, rookie Isack Hadjar impressed in his first qualifying appearance for Red Bull, setting a 1:19.303 to take third.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, followed by home favorite Oscar Piastri in fifth. Norris settled for sixth, ahead of Ferrari newcomer Lewis Hamilton in seventh.

The Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and rookie Arvid Lindblad took eighth and ninth, while Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto completed the top ten despite failing to set a lap in Q3 after a late Q2 incident.

The 2026 season opener at Albert Park begins Sunday at 12 p.m. Manila time, ushering in a new era following Formula 1’s sweeping regulation overhaul.
