FILIPINA-American race car driver Michele Marie Bumgarner provided a glimpse of what she can do in the new Pro Mazda Championship car with a fine finish in the series finale recently in Houston.
The lone female and only Asian in the grid of 15 at Reliant Park street circuit, Bumgarner started in 13th and finished in ninth place.
The 24-year-old Bumgarner finished strong behind teammate Kyle Kaiser, who was just two seconds ahead in eighth place. For this achievement, the organizers gave Michele the Staubli Award and Quarter Master Hard Charger Award.
After seeing action in the Star Mazda Championship in 2008, Bumgarner is seeking a regular spot in the 2014 season of the new series and she showed she can be a force to reckon with.
Bumgarner is being backed by Mazda Philippines in the bid to represent the country in Indy Car racing.
The 2014 Pro Mazda Championship, part of the Mazda Road to Indy program, starts in Florida in March next year.
