REIGNING Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris denied George Russell a chance to sweep the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, snatching pole position for Sunday's main race in a dramatic qualifying session on Saturday.

The reigning world champion clocked a 1:11.163 to edge Russell by just over a tenth of a second, stopping the Mercedes driver from following up his Sprint pole and victory with another field-leading performance at Circuit Zandvoort.

Norris' pole came after a tense Q3 in which the threat of rain denied the drivers their customary final flying lap.

With the weather closing in during the final minutes, the drivers had to get their attempts in earlier than usual, leaving little room for another run once the conditions began to deteriorate.

Norris made his count, securing his second straight pole after also starting first and winning the Hungarian Grand Prix before the summer break.

McLaren also extended its pole streak at Zandvoort to three consecutive years in the process. The polesitter has won the last five races at Zandvoort, including Norris in 2024 and Piastri last year.

"It doesn't get any better, a little surprised honestly. A decent lap, I was pushing as you've seen how close it is, every one-hundredth can make a difference," Norris said.

"We had to try something as what we had before wasn't enough, so we made some small changes to give me some more confidence."

Kimi Antonelli slots in third for Mercedes, while Oscar Piastri put the second McLaren fourth. Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc followed for Ferrari, with Max Verstappen seventh in his final home Grand Prix at Zandvoort.

Liam Lawson, Gabriel Bortoleto and Arvid Lindblad completed the top 10.

Russell's early rise

Russell opened the second half of the season in style, turning Sprint pole into victory earlier Saturday for the third time this year.

Fresh from his engagement to longtime partner Carmen Mundt, the Mercedes driver controlled the 24-lap Sprint from the front to add Zandvoort to his previous Sprint victories in China and Canada.

Charles Leclerc finished second after overtaking Norris on Lap 18, while Norris held on for third ahead of Antonelli. Piastri finished fifth, followed by Verstappen, Hamilton and Pierre Gasly to complete the points-paying positions.

Russell's victory came as rain began to fall around the circuit, adding another layer to a weekend repeatedly affected by wet conditions since F1 returned to the Netherlands.

With the Sprint already in his pocket, Russell entered qualifying with a chance to take pole and position himself for a weekend sweep. While he did come close, Norris' late lap proved just enough to block him.

The defending champion now has the advantage heading into the final Dutch Grand Prix, with Russell forced to settle for a spot alongside him on the front row.

And with five consecutive Zandvoort races won from pole, Norris has more than just bragging rights on his side.
